IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Day two at the Big Ten Indoor Championships is in the books as the Northwestern Wildcats took on foes from around the conference in singles matches throughout the day Saturday.

Two Wildcats, senior Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and sophomore Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) were both victorious in their opening matches of the day. Spector took down William Heuer from Purdue in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Smith defeated Wisconsin's Austin Akers in a similar fashion, winning 6-2, 6-0.

Four other 'Cats were in action in the round of 64, however they ended up falling short of victory in very competitive matches. Northwestern's Nikhil Jayashankar (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) won the opening set against Wisconsin's Alex Teppert, 7-5, but fell by an identical score of 6-4 in the two frames that followed. Senior Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) also fell victim to his opponent, Minnesota's Mathieu Froment in three, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) lost against Illinois' Stephen Hoh, 6-1, 6-3, while freshman Alberto Zanotti (Valencia, Venezuela/C.I. Carabobo) lost versus Purdue's Evan Hawkins, 7-5, 6-4.

In the second round of matches, Northwestern saw two players win and a third, Zanotti, advance by forfeit. Jayashankar rebounded to win his back draw match over Michigan State's Harry Jadun, 6-3, 7-5. Graves also won his second match of the day Saturday, beating Iowa's Garrett Dunn, 6-4, 7-6.

Reitz fell for a second time, losing to Michael Swank, 7-6, 6-2 in the back draw. Smith and Spector both fell in the main draw in their second action of the day. Smith fell to Will Kendall of Indiana, 6-1, 6-1, while Spector was bested Saturday by Wisconsin's Alex Konstanov, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

The action continues from the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Sunday morning. For a complete look at results and schedules, please visit the Tournament Central page (link above).
