IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Opening day at the Big Ten Men's Indoor Championships is in the books as Northwestern sent three doubles teams to he courts at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center in Iowa City, Iowa on Friday.

Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) and Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) teamed up in Flight A Friday. After dropping their opening match, 8-1, to Indiana's Josh McTaggart and Stephen Vogl, the pair moved to the back draw. There, they picked up a win against Purdue's pair of Pawel Poziomski and William Heuer. In their final match of the day, Graves and Smith lost to Michigan State's Gijs Linders and Drew Lied, 8-6.

In flight B, four Wildcats paired off to compete. Both pairings featured a senior and a freshman as Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) teamed with Nikhil Jayashankar (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) and Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) played along side Alberto Zanotti (Valencia, Venezuela/C.I. Carabobo).

Both pairs won their opening matches as Spector and Jayashankar knocked off Wisconsin's Jack Larsen and Austin Akers, 9-7. In their second match, the duo fell to Iowa's Matt Hagan and Jonas Dierckx, 8-3. Spector and Jayashankar would go on, however, to win twice more in the draw over a pair from Michigan, and another from Iowa.

Reitz and Zanotti won two in a row to start the day, beating Iowa's Garrett Dunn and Michael Swank, 8-4, and then another team of Hawkeyes, Chase Tomlins and Joey White, 8-3. The run came to an end in the semifinals when they fell to Wisconsin's Alex Robles and Alex Teppert, 8-1.

The singles draw will commence with the round of 64 on Saturday morning. The Wildcats will send all six players into the draw led by Graves, who enters the field as the second seed in the draw behind only McTaggart; Smith is ranked in seeds 9-16. Graves will face Minnesota's Mathieu Froment in the round of 64, while Smith will square off with Wisconsin's Akers.

Spector faces Purdue's Heuer in the opening round of play; Zanotti also faces a Boilermaker in Evan Hawkins. Reitz will play Illinois' Stephen Hoh and Jayashankar draws Wisconsin's Teppert.

Jayashankar is the first NU player to take the court at 8 a.m. and Smith will follow at 9:30 a.m. Spector and Reitz will begin at 11 a.m., while Zanotti and Graves will play at 12:30 p.m.
