WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Friday was a busy day for the Wildcats as play wrapped after one round of singles and three rounds of doubles competition.
Junior Alberto Zanotti defeated Charlie Shin of Nebraska 7-5, 6-4 and goes on to face the number one seed, Michigan's Vlad Stefan, at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. Sophomore Fedor Baev collected a win over Purdue's Diego Acosta 6-4, 6-2, and will go against ninth-seeded Collado Castells from Penn State at 10:15 a.m.
Freshman Strong Kirchheimer moved into the second round after his opponent Barrett Franks of Michigan retired after the first set. Kirchheimer had won the first set 6-1. He will take on Nebraska's Vasileios Stravropoulos at 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
In a qualifying round, freshman Alp Horoz was knocked out by Michigan State's Mac Roy in a close match 7-6 (4), 6-4. He will play a consolation match against Purdue's Acosta Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
In doubles competition, the duo of Baev and Kirchheimer won two matches before falling in the quarterfinals. In the first round, they defeated Nebraska's Clark-Shin 8-5, and followed that with a victory over Penn State's Collado Castells-Dolidze 8-3. They were knocked out by Nebraska's Herrmann-Treyz in the elite eight, falling 8-6.
Horoz and Zanotti beat Blackwell-Boyer of Nebraska 8-5 in the opening round, but then fell to Michigan State's Jadun-Linders 8-6.
