EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern continued to play well at the Wildcat Invitational at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday as the 'Cats racked up another trio of wins on the second day of play.
Senior Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) was the first Wildcat to play on Saturday as he continued play in Flight A of the singles draw against Maksym Bartiuk of Northern Illinois. After dropping the first set, 3-6, Spector was dominant in the match as he went on to win the second set, 6-1, and the third-set tiebreaker, 10-3. Spector will face DePaul's George Chanturia on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
A pair of freshmen were also in action in Flight B of the singles draw for Northwestern. Nikhil Jayashankar (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga) and Alberto Zanotti (Valencia, Venezuela/C.I. Carabobo) both looked to build on wins on day one of the tournament. Jayashankar lost the first set to his opponent, Simon Bloomberg of Western Michigan, 6-7, but like Spector before him, rebounded to win the second set by a score of 6-2. In the epic third-set tiebreaker, Jayashankar outlasted Bloomberg, 16-14, to advance. The newcomer will face Illinois' Tim Kopinski on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Zanotti faced Marquette's Jon Schwerin in his second match of the tournament. The Venezuelan fell to Schwerin in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Jayashankar and Zanotti also paired up in flight A of the doubles draw. After winning twice on Friday, the Wildcats posted another win on Saturday, this time knocking down Big Ten rivals Robles and Teppert from Wisconsin, 8-6.
The Wildcat Invitational concludes at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday. Play begins with singles matches at 8 a.m.
