WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College), Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) each won all three of their matches to lead Northwestern to a 13-4 record on the first day of competition at the Boilermaker Invitational.
Lock topped Butler's Mike Weaver 6-4, 6-3 in his first singles match, then followed it up with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Purdue's Brian Rager. In doubles, Lock teamed with Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) to beat Western Michigan's Tommy Dennis and Jeff French 8-6.
Christian took a 6-4, 6-3 victory from Butler's James Low and a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Toledo's Travis Curran, then paired with Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) to breeze past Western Michigan's Dan Grupp and Jose Orozco 8-2.
Wahla took down Butler's Chris Peric 6-2, 6-2 and Toledo's Todd Wojtkowski 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, and with teammate Jamie Friedland (Glen Cove, N.Y./St. Stephen's) beat Western Michigan's Erik Lindroos and Justin Kates 8-6.
In other singles competition for the Wildcats, Schaechterle fell to Butler's Brandon Gill 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, but bounced back to a get a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Toledo's Tony Tran.
Perrin lost to Butler's Kevin Gill 6-1, 7-5 in his only singles match.
Friedland dropped his match to Butler's Evan West 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Afterward, he filled a spot as a Toledo player and lost to another Toledo player, Freddy Gomez, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.
Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) easily won his match over Butler's Scott Newmark 6-0, 6-2. Hoeveler also filled a spot for Toledo, losing to Toledo's Cristobal Toral 6-3, 6-2.
Hoeveler then joined teammate Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge) and lost to Western Michigan's Ravi Pathanjali and Brady Crosby 8-3.
Tempke in singles competition beat Butler's James Low 6-4, 6-3 and Toledo's Khalid Al-Nabhani 6-1, 6-2.
Competition in the Boilermaker Invitational concludes on Sunday.
