ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Wildcats were unable to pull out singles victories in Friday's first round play at the 2009 ITA Midwest Regionals, hosted by Michigan. The 'Cats look to rebound in doubles and will also be moving to the consolation singles draw.
Play started for the Wildcats at 11 a.m. As both Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla/Laurel Springs) and Mark Schanerman (North Miami Beach, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop HS) took the court. Schanerman dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Notre Dame's Stephen Havens.
Wolf, facing Toledo's Nutthavit Likitkumchorn, dropped the first set 6-3. The Wildcat freshman then rebounded to take the second set, 6-4, before falling 6-2 in the third set.
Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) was next on court in the afternoon. Taking on Ohio State's Matt Allare, the Wildcat senior jumped out to take the first set, 6-4. He was unable to hold on as Allare won the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) was last up on court for the 'Cats, taking on qualifier Dave Robare of UIC. The match was close throughout, but Robare managed to squeak out the 7-5, 7-6(5) victory.
With long matches delaying play on Court 4, Schanerman and Wolf will have a late start to their Friday evening match against Ryan Hamning and Phil Orno of Cleveland State.
