COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Joshua Graves and Spencer Wolf each posted opening-round victories Friday and teamed up for a win in doubles at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Alexandru Pasareanu and Raleigh Smith also advanced in doubles action.

Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) returned to action Friday for the first time since Sept. 23 at the Baylor-HEB Invitational. Graves, the draw's ninth seed, shook off some initial rust in his opening match against Wisconsin's Alex Konstanov and rebounded after dropping the first set, 3-6, to claim the next two in order, 6-3, 6-3. The senior will move on to face Illinoi State's Jusso Ojanen in the round of 32 Saturday.

Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) was also victorious in the round of 64. The junior bested Michael Tenzer of Green Bay in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. Wolf, who began play as the 13th seed, will square off against Big Ten foe Bruno Abdelnour from Illinois on Saturday morning.

The third Wildcat to finish his match Friday was sophomore Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep). Smith was bettered in the first set by Michigan State's Ronnie Hulewicz, 4-6, however he rallied back to win the next set in commanding fashion, 6-1, to even the match at two apiece. Hulewicz rushed out to a 4-0 lead, but Smith battled back once again to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Spartan would win the final game and prevail in the third, 6-2.

Pasareanu (Bluffton, S.C./Heritage Academy), a freshman, was in action for the first time since fall's first tournament, the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. In the opening round, Pasareanu drew Ohio State's Peter Kobelt, the tournament's sixth-highest seed. Pasareanu battled Kobelt, especially in the first set, before falling 7-5. Kobelt captured the second set, as well, 6-2, to advance.

Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) was also competing on Friday for the first time since the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Reitz drew nearby foe Sven Kasper from DePaul. Kasper won the match in straight sets by an identical score, 6-2, 6-2.

In the main doubles draw, Pasareanu and Smith were each able to redeem themselves as they paired up to knock off Detroit's pair of Alex Latosinsky and Mike Basha, 8-1. NU's pairing moves on to face Ohio State's duo of Nelson Vick and Hunter Callahan Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Wolf and Graves also prevailed in their doubles match against Green Bay, 8-5. Northwestern's double victors from Friday will face Big Ten foes from Wisconsin, Fredrik Ask and Alex Robles in the next round. That match is scheduled for late Saturday afternoon.

Action in the round of 32 in the main singles draw commences Saturday at 7 a.m. CT with the round of 16 slated to begin at approximately 11 a.m. Doubles matches are scheduled to be played at the Varsity Tennis Center beginning at 2:30 p.m. with the next round on tap at around 5:15 p.m.
