EAST LANSING, Mich. -- No. 32 Northwestern secured a swift 4-0 victory over 12th-seeded Iowa in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. With the win, the fifth-seeded Wildcats face No. 34 Purdue, the tournament's fourth seed, in the quarterfinal Friday morning at 9 a.m. CT. The 'Cats have won eight matches in a row and achieved their twentieth win of the season.
NU took the first point of the day with two doubles victories at No. 1 and 2. The 28th-ranked duo of senior Raleigh Smith and sophomore Mihir Kumar blanked their Iowa opponents 8-0 at No. 1, and freshman Sam Shropshire and junior Alex Pasareanu then clinched 8-4 at No. 2.
Three Wildcats currently on remarkable winning streaks claimed the next three points in singles play to capture the NU win. No. 120 Shropshire continued his winning ways with his twelfth straight victory at No. 2, defeating Brian Alden 6-1, 6-4.
Freshman Strong Kirchheimer also maintained his streak with his twelfth consecutive win, overpowering Dominic Patrick 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. To finish the match, Pasareanu beat Michael Swank 6-4, 7-5. The victory extended Pasareanu's win streak to nine.
With the match decided, play discontinued at the remaining singles contests. The `Cats had taken the first sets in all of them.
