WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- In a clash of two evenly matched squads, No. 72 Northwestern asserted itself with a sweep of No. 67 Purdue in doubles, but the Boilermakers escaped with four singles victories to edge NU, 4-3, Sunday in West Lafayette. It was Northwestern's third 4-3 loss of the Big Ten dual season.
Head coach Arvid Swan's team looked strong from start to finish of doubles play, getting its first win by an 8-5 margin at No. 2 by senior Andrew McCarthy and junior Tobias Reitz over Eric Ramos and Krisztian Krocsko.
At No. 2, Raleigh Smith and Chris Jackman clinched the doubles point when they upended Aaron Dujovne and Mark Kovacs, 8-4. It was the 13th time this season NU took a 1-0 lead into singles and, after Joshua Graves and Spencer Wolf closed out an 8-5 victory at the No. 1 line, the 10th time the Wildcats had won all three doubles contests.
The `Cats surrendered a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Kovacs at No. 2 singles as the Boilermakers got back in the match at one-all. Soon after, the hosts were ahead 2-1 as Krocsko managed to get the better of Raleigh Smith in the third set of their No. 4 singles match, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
NU tied the score at two thanks to Wolf's impressive 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Aaron Dujovne, his 11th singles dual singles victory of the year. His doubles partner, Graves, was then edged in consecutive narrow sets, 7-5, 7-6, by Szymon Tatarczyk at No. 1.
That left Northwestern needing wins in the final two matches on the court to pull out its third Big Ten dual victory of the year, but Purdue's Eric Ramos persevered at No. 5 singles over Reitz, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore Chris Jackman did make sure NU's day ended with a win, however, coming back from an early deficit in the third set to knock off Pawel Poziomski, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 and record his 10th singles win of the year.
Northwestern returns to Evanston for its final two matches of the regular season next weekend, hosting Michigan State Friday and Michigan on Sunday.
