EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 37 Northwestern closed out a successful weekend with a 5-0 win over IUPUI, the Wildcats' last non-conference opponent for the dual match season. With their three home victories this weekend, the `Cats are now 15-9 on the season and 3-4 in the Big Ten.
Doubles play began fairly evenly, but the `Cats were able to pull ahead in the latter half of the matches to go up 1-0. NU won at No. 1 and 2 to secure the point, both by a score of 8-4.
Junior Alex Pasareanu gave NU its second point in singles, overwhelming Manuel Laboy at No. 5 with a quick 6-0, 6-0 victory. Freshman Alp Horoz soon followed suit with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 6 to put the `Cats within one of the win.
The remaining matches were all near completion at the end, but freshman Strong Kirchheimer ultimately clinched the Wildcat win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Sophomore Fedor Baev finished a few seconds later at No. 4, beating Patrick O'Neill 6-3, 6-3. Freshmen Sam Shropshire's and Konrad Zieba's contests discontinued at No. 1 and 2 respectively to conclude the match.
