EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 37 Northwestern displayed strong finishing power as it notched a 6-1 victory over 73rd-ranked Michigan State Sunday afternoon at Vandy Christie Tennis Center.

Playing in the first outdoor match of the season on their home courts, the Wildcats outlasted the Spartans in a number of close singles matches to earn their second win of the weekend.

Michigan State got out to an early advantage in doubles as the No. 2 team of Gijs Linders and Harry Jadum defeated Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba 8-2. The Wildcats evened things up with a victory at No. 2 as Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer rolled to an 8-3 victory.

Northwestern held off a late charge at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point with the 30th-ranked team of Raleigh Smith and Mihir Kumar defeating John Patrick Mullane and Drew Lied, 8-5.

Kumar didn't waste much time in pushing the Northwestern advantage to 2-0 as he made quick work of Linders at No. 4 singles, cruising to dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory. Michigan State got on the board with a victory at No. 1 as Lied upset Smith, ranked 37th, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

All other four matches on the courts were tightly contested, but victories by Kirchheimer at No. 5 and Alex Pasareanu at No. 6 clinched the match victory for the Wildcats. Kirchheimer rallied back from a set down to defeat Jadun 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Meanwhile, Pasareanu held off Will Davis 7-5, 7-5, allowing NU to clinch a weekend sweep of the Michigan schools.

Shropshire, ranked No. 113, was involved in the most hotly contested match of the afternoon at No. 2 as he rallied back in the third set to hand Mullane a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 defeat. Moments later, Zieba wrapped up the productive afternoon with a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) win over Forman at No. 3.

Northwestern is right back in action Sunday evening when it hosts IUPUI at 7 p.m. indoors at Combe Tennis Center.
