COLUMBUS, Ohio. -- No. 28 Northwestern gave No. 2 Ohio State an impressive fight in Columbus, but the Buckeyes ultimately prevailed 4-3. The ‘Cats fall to 12-8 on the season and 1-3 in Big Ten play.
NU went toe-to-toe with the Buckeyes in doubles competition, but OSU claimed narrow wins at No. 1 and 2 to jump ahead 1-0. At No. 1, senior Raleigh Smith and freshman Sam Shropshire took the sixth-ranked OSU team to a tiebreaker, but ultimately fell 8-7 (7-2).
Ohio State extended its lead with victories at No. 4 and 6 in singles matches, all of which wrapped in two sets. Junior Alex Pasareanu was on the brink of forcing a third set at No. 6, but dropped the second frame tiebreaker 7-3.
Northwestern would not go down easily, however, and secured back-to-back triumphs with Kirchheimer at No. 5 and Shropshire at No. 2, pulling within one of Ohio State. Kirchheimer claimed a marquee 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 97 Hunter Callahan, his first career win over a ranked opponent.
In the end, No. 8 Peter Kobelt decided the match at No. 1, besting No. 37 Smith 6-1, 7-5. To finish play, freshman Konrad Zieba clinched a narrow 7-5, 7-5 victory at No. 3 to round out the final score of 4-3.
