EVANSTON, Ill. -- After facing two Big Ten foes this weekend, No. 24 Northwestern finished out Sunday night with a 4-0 victory over UIC. The ‘Cats improve to 12-7 on the season.
With a non-conference opponent, NU had room to play with its lineup and was able to end a four-match doubles point drought with wins at No. 1 and 3. Senior Raleigh Smith and sophomore Fedor Baev finished first with a quick 8-0 victory in the third position, and freshman Alp Horoz and sophomore Mihir Kumar prevailed 8-5 in the first.
In his first dual season doubles match since mid-January, freshman Konrad Zieba returned from injury to join fellow classmate Sam Shropshire at No. 2. Down 2-5 at one point, they had battled back to tie it 5-5 when play discontinued.
To begin singles play, Horoz added another Wildcat point with an early 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Junior Alex Pasareanu then put the ‘Cats within one of the victory at No. 5, defeating Maurizio Feoli 6-2, 6-0. To seal the win, Kumar beat Carl Hedstrom 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3.
Both Kirchheimer and Baev were leading in their second sets when the match was decided. Shropshire was up 4-0 in his first set tiebreaker at No. 1.
Northwestern now rests for nearly three weeks during final exams and spring vacation. The ‘Cats return to Big Ten competition at Ohio State on Friday, March 28 at 5 p.m.
