EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 29 Northwestern pulled off a rewarding 5-2 victory over No. 27 North Carolina State on Sunday, moving to 9-4 on the season. This is the second time the `Cats have defeated a higher-ranked opponent in 2014, the last of which was a 4-3 win over No. 24 Tulsa a month ago.

NU's resiliency showed again when the `Cats had to overcome an early deficit. N.C. State claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. NCSU pulled ahead again when Norenius topped Baev 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 in singles play.

But the Wildcats did not let the Wolfpack score again, and went on to achieve five straight singles victories. Kumar started the ball rolling with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Thomas Weigel.

No. 81 Shropshire at No. 2 and Kirchheimer at No. 4 then triumphed within seconds of each other to put the Wildcats up 3-2. Shropshire broke No. 100 Robbie Mudge in the first game of the third set, and stayed steady to prevail 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Kirchheimer took as long as Shropshire to finish just two sets, but he secured a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win over Sean Weber.

With the middle matches complete, attention turned to the third sets of No. 111 Smith at No. 1 and Pasareanu at No. 6. Both were incredibly close, but Pasareanu successfully broke Beck Bond in the last game to win 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 and lock-up the NU victory.

Smith finished out at No. 1. With the pressure off, he was able to break his opponent twice in the last frame and upset No. 33 Austin Powell 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to seal the final winning score of 5-2. This marks his third singles victory over a higher-ranked opponent this season, and his second over one in the top-40. Last time, the senior beat No. 37 Greg Andrews of Notre Dame.

Northwestern finishes the second half of Sunday's double-header at 7 p.m. against Valparaiso.
