EVANSTON, Ill. -- Spencer Wolf pulled off an upset win at No. 1 singles, but 33rd-ranked Northwestern was edged by No. 40 Vanderbilt 4-3 at Combe Tennis Center on Friday.

Vanderbilt was able to jump in front by capturing the doubles point. The Wildcats were the victors in the first match to finish at No. 1 as Sidarth Balaji and Raleigh Smith outlasted the team of Ryan Lipman and Rhys Johnson, 8-6.

The Commodores evened things with an 8-5 win at No. 3 before squelching an NU rally in the decisive match at No. 2 as Spencer Wolf and Fedor Baev came up just short against Gonzales Austin and Suresh Eswaran, 8-6.

In singles action, Balaji evened the match with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rhys Johnson at No. 3. Vanderbilt soon regained the lead in the match when 114th-ranked Kris Yee defeated Fedor Baev at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3.

The dual continued to see-saw back and forth when Alex Pasareanu was able to finish off Jeff Offerdahl in straight sets at No. 4 by a score of 6-2, 7-6 to even the match at two apiece.

The lone matchup of two ranked players came at No. 2 where 17th-ranked Ryan Lipman managed to get by No. 108 Raleigh Smith 6-4, 6-4, bringing the visitors within one match of the win.

Wolf knotted the match again at 3-3 when he outlasted No. 20 Gonzales Austin in three sets, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

The last remaining match was at No. 5, but unfortunately for Northwestern, Marc van der Merwe was able to hold off Chris Jackman 6-3, 7-5 to give Vanderbilt the victory.
