DURHAM, N.C. -- No. 37 Northwestern saw its run at the ITA Indoor Team Championship come to an end Saturday afternoon as it was handed its first loss of the season by No. 5 Duke, 4-0.

The Wildcats faced a talented Blue Devils' squad that has all six singles players and all three doubles teams with national rankings.

Duke captured the doubles point as it got wins at Nos. 1 and 3. At No. 2, the Northwestern duo of Raleigh Smith and Sidarth Balaji was tied 5-5 with 39th-ranked Jason Tahir and Michael Redlicki when the match was abandoned.

The Blue Devils were then able to notch straight-set victories at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles to clinch the match and earn a berth in the tournament's main draw coming up in mid-February in Seattle.

The Wildcats were getting solid performances from 108th-ranked Smith at No. 2 and Balaji at No. 3 when the three remaining matches were abandoned. Smith led 23rd-ranked Fred Saba 7-5, 2-0, while Balaji surrendered the first set to 14th-ranked Michael Redlicki 6-1 before bouncing back to take the second 6-4.
