    Men's Tennis Team Notches Second Seed At NCAA Region IV Championship

    Silva and Witt Earn Automatic Bids to NCAA Singles Championship

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern men's tennis team earned the No. 2 seed at the NCAA Region IV Tennis Championship, which will take place at the University of Notre Dame on Fri.-Sun., May 15-17. The 'Cats will play seventh-seeded Louisville on Fri., May 15 at 1 p.m. In the first round of the NCAA women's regional, the 'Cats will take on second-seeded Notre Dame on Fri., May 15, at 2 p.m. at the University of Illinois.

    The NU men, ranked No. 31 nationally, enter the regional with a 17-5 overall record. The 'Cats, led by Big Ten Player of the Year Marc Silva, were the runner-up at the Big Ten Tournament last weekend, falling to Illinois (4-1) in the final match.

    Silva and senior Alex Witt earned automatic bids to the NCAA Singles Championship, which will be held on May 23-26 at the University of Georgia. This individual championship will consist of 64 players and 32 doubles team. This is Witt's third-consecutive bid to the individual championship. He participated in the singles championship last season and teamed with former Wildcat Rafael Rizo-Patron in 1996. Silva is making is first appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship.

    The Wildcat women have a 13-10 overall record entering next weekend's regional. The 'Cats are led by Big Ten Player of the Year Katherine Nasser.
