    Ernst Named Assistant Men's Tennis Coach at Northwestern

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head men's tennis coach Paul Torricelli announced today that Gordie Ernst was named the assistant men's tennis coach for the Wildcat program.

    Ernst comes to Northwestern from The Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Fla., where he coached at the Harry Hopman Tennis Academy. During his stint at the Academy, Ernst tutored top-ranked international junior players and served as a hitting partner with current professional players such as Jennifer Capriati and Sarg Sargisian. Ernst played on the ATP International Tennis Circuit from 1990-93.

    From 1994-97, Ernst worked in private business for both Lehman Brothers in New York and the Frank X. Peron Insurance Agency in Fall River, Mass.

    Ernst graduated from Brown University in 1990 with a B.A. in business management/organizational behavior. While at Brown he was a two-sport athlete, lettering in both ice hockey and tennis. Named Athlete of the Year by the Rhode Island Press Association, Ernst was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in the 10th round of the National Hockey League draft in 1985. He also was selected by the Providence Journal Bulletin as the top male student athlete in Rhode Island in 1985. Ernst was ranked second in New England and 38th in the country in the boys 18-and-under division.
