EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after earning high individual scoring honors at the Wildcats' 2009 TYR Invitational.

Mathews racked up a pair of NCAA Championship `B' provisional qualifying cuts comprised of a convincing win in the 200 fly (1:47.35) and as a member of the 800 free relay (6:41.48). He also took first in the 100 fly, second in the 50 fly and third in the 200 individual medley. In addition to the 800 free relay, Mathews contributed to NU's winning 200 medley and 200 free quartets, as well as a second-place 400 free relay and third-place 400 medley relay.

Mathews' award is the first of the junior's career and gives Northwestern a Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honoree in each of the last 10 seasons dating back to 2000-01.
