    Northwestern Opens 2013-14 Season with Combined Meet Friday

    EVANSTON, Ill.-The Northwestern men's and women's swimming and diving teams open their seasons Friday, Oct. 18 at the Norris Aquatics Center.

    Both the men's and women's teams will square off against Eastern Michigan. The Wildcats women's program will additionally face Illinois.

    For the NU women's teams, the Wildcats return with seven seniors, Mary Kate Campbell, Fallon Fitzpatrick, Megan Goss, Cosima Lenz, Jackie Powell, Erin Sosdian and Becca Soderholm.

    Diver Mary Kate Campbell (Burr Ridge, Ill./Fenwick) competed in all three events at the Big Ten Championships last season, placing 19th on the platform with a career-best score of 238.20, 26th on the 3-meter springboard and 32nd on the 1-meter springboard. Campbell qualified for the championship finals of the 3-meter springboard at NU's own six-team TYR Invitational (11/16-11/18), finishing second overall.

    In 2012-13, Fallon Fitzpatrick (Delray Beach, Fla./Boca Raton Community) had a strong Big Ten Championships in 2012-13, matching her career-best time of 57.46 in the 100 fly (49th) while nearly doing the same in the 200 fly (47th) and 500 free (62nd).

    Megan Goss (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood) ranked on NU's top times list in six different events in 2012-13, including tops in the 200 breast, fourth in the 1,000 free, 1,650 free and 100 breast, and fifth in the 500 free and 400 IM.

    A member of Northwestern's strong diving corps, ranking as NU's top diver of the 2012-13 fall season, Cosima Lenz (Altadena, Calif./Polytechnic School) recorded the Wildcats' best 1-meter (285.00) and 3-meter (304.95) scores of the fall and scored points at every height at the Big Ten Championships, led by a fifth-place performance on the 10-meter platform where she scored a 320.60 in the finals to blow away her previous career best of 287.75 by 32.85 points.

    Jackie Powell (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) returns after missing most of last season with an injury.  In 2012-13, she won the 100 free and placed second in the 200 free against Illinois. In 2011-12, Powell ranked on NU's top times list in every event from the 50 to the 1,000, including first in the 200 free and 500 free, second in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free and 1,000 free. 

    In 2012-13, Erin Sosdian (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Park) was a member of the `Cats middle distance and distance freestyle groups while also competing in the backstroke. Sosdian ranked on Northwestern's top times list in six different events in 2012-13, including ranking second in the mile after lowering her career-best by more than five seconds with a 16:38.46 to win the event at NU's own six-team TYR Invitational (11/16-11/18).

    Last season, Becca Soderholm (Madison, Wis./Madison East) ranked first on NU's top times list for the year in the 400 IM, second in the 200 fly and 200 IM, third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 200 breast. Soderholm swam an NCAA `B' consideration time of 4:18.75 in the 400 IM to qualify for the scoring consolation final at the Big Ten Championships, where she lowered that effort to a season-best `B' cut of 4:17.93 to place 12th.

    Northwestern men's swimming and diving returns with seniors Dominik Cubelic, Brien Gerber, Ross McAuliffe, Nick Pinkerton, Tim Smith, Chase Stephens and Matt Wilcox.

    Last season, Dominik Cubelic (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) ranked on NU's top times list in four different events while also swimming with all of Northwestern's best relays of the season at the Big Ten Championships. Cubelic ranked first on the team in the 100 back, third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 200 back and 100 free.

    Brien Gerber (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) ranked on NU's top times list in four different events in 2012-13, finishing the year among his teammates fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 IM.

    Diver Nick Pinkerton (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) stepped up as Northwestern's lone diver for much of the season in 2012-13. Pinkerton competed in the 10-meter platform (24th), 3-meter springboard (26th) and 1-meter springboard (27th) at the Big Ten Championships.

    Tim Smith (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle) ranked fourth on NU's top times list in the 100 breast in 2012-13 and also served as the Northwestern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Big Ten representative. He swam a career-best times at both breaststroke distances at the Big Ten Championships, finishing 35th in the 100 with a 57.89 and 41st in the 200 with a 2:09.01.

    In 2012-13, Chase Stephens (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) qualified for his first-career NCAA Championships after establishing career-best times in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events at the Big Ten Championships. At the NCAA meet, he placed 43rd in the 100 free (44.22) and 44th in the 50 free (20.34). Last season, Stephens also ranked first for NU in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free while ranking fourth in the 500 free on the Wildcats' top times list for the year.

    Sophomore Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) was selected to the USA Swimming Open Water National Team. Wilimovsky, who qualified for the USA National Team with fourth-place results in both the 5K and 10K open water races at the National Championships and Team Trials in May, had a strong showing in his first 25K open water swim, in July. He finished 14th overall in the world with a time of 4:49.11.1, just 1.44.1 off the lead at the FINA World Championships.

    Freshman Andy Jovanovic (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) joins the team after being named to the USA Swimming 2013-14 Junior National Team in the 100 backstroke. Jovanovic recorded a time of 56.41 in the 100 backstroke during the US Open.
