OMAHA, Neb. -- Northwestern 2007 graduate Matt Grevers won the 100-meter backstroke in resounding fashion Wednesday night at the United States Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., earning a berth on the team for London.

Grevers pulled away from the field with a time of 52.08, which is the second-fastest time in history. The time surpasses the 52.11 turned in by Camille Lacourt of France on Aug. 10, 2010, to trail only fellow American Aaron Peirsol's world record 51.94 set July 8, 2009, as the top performance all-time in the event. Grevers' effort was 1.11 seconds faster than his second-place time of 53.19 at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, when he touched behind Peirsol's 52.89.

Grevers eventually went on to win an individual silver medal in the 100 back in Beijing. Grevers also won two gold medals in Beijing as a member of United States relays.

The Lake Forest, Ill., native won two 100-yard backstroke NCAA championships for the Wildcats in 2005 and 2006. He also captured the 200 back and was a member of the NCAA champion 400 medley relay in 2007.

The U.S. Olympic Trials continue through July 2. Grevers is Northwestern's second alum to qualify for the London Olympic Games; he joins wrestler Jake Herbert as NU representatives for Team USA.
