EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 17 Northwestern will split its squad this weekend for a pair of meets, participating in the prestigious Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic while also hosting Carthage College at the Norris Aquatics Center.
Eight Wildcat swimmers and one diver will make the trip to Dallas for the two-day meet hosted Friday-Saturday, Jan. 11-12, by SMU. Meet action is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 p.m. CT both days, with live results available at SMUmustangs.com.
Meanwhile, the rest of NU's team will swim at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, against Division III Carthage College in Evanston. Also participating in the meet will be Division III Olivet College, but it will be competing only against Carthage.
Northwestern, which won the title at last year's DMN Classic, will face No. 19 USC, No. 24 SMU and Arizona State, which is one point shy of reaching the top-25, at this season's event. Also competing in the meet is a team of "Texas All-Stars" from the University of Texas, featuring graduates and U.S. Olympic gold medalists Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Ian Crocker.
The meet format allows for two entries from each team in each event, with one diver competing on each board. Representing Northwestern will be seniors Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North), Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) and Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity); juniors Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep) and Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston); and freshmen Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) and Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves).
Individually, Nilsson is ranked ninth in the nation in the 500 free and 18th in the 200 free entering this weekend, while Bubolz is 13th in the 100 fly according to collegeswimming.com
This weekend's action marks the first for Northwestern since its training-trip duals against Florida Atlantic and Denver back on Dec. 19.
