    Northwestern Men's Swimming and Diving Enjoys Solid Second Day at Big Ten Championships

    Freshman Steve Steketee Takes Home Big Ten Title in 200 Free

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern men's swimming and diving team posted some impressive numbers in the second day of action at the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Despite being in eighth place, NU is just 29.5 points behind sixth-place Purdue heading into tomorrow's final day of competition.

    The highlight of the day and of the championships came in the 200 free where freshman Steve Steketee took home the Big Ten title. His time of 1:37.14 was a bit slower than his qualifying time of 1:36.95, but it was better than second place by a relatively large margin of .38 seconds. Steketee surprised everyone as he had gone no faster than 1:39.00 all season. Steve Harms was 14th in a time of 1:39.85. Steve Vongluekiat also posted an impressive finish, taking third in the 100 breast with a time of 54.92. Brian Walters was fifth in the 100 back with a time of 48.80 and Bill Johnson took 13th in 50.14. Adam Conway took 14th in the 100 fly with a time of 50.05 and both the 200 medley and 800 free relays took fourth. They touched in 1:29.63 and 6:35.19, respectively.

    The third and final day of competition is tomorrow with the preliminaries in the afternoon and the finals starting at 7 p.m.
