Northwestern leads the meet with 916 points, while Southern Illinois has 596. Michigan State is third with 562 points and Kenyon College is fourth with 453.
The Wildcats wasted no time wasting a pool record, swimming an NCAA `B' cut of 1:28.21 to win the 200 medley relay and best their own pool record of 1:28.82 set in 2004. Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) comprised the relay.
Nilsson lowered his time further in the finals, swimming a 3:55.91 to defeat the next-closest swimmer by 6.5 seconds. Vogel won the `B' final with a 4:05.57.
Southern Illinois' Stephen Ackerman qualified first for the 100 fly during the prelims, but was followed by six Wildcats. Grevers, Nilsson and Bubolz made the super final, while Chris Doman (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)), Barbic and Bryan Pinkston (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) were the top three qualifiers for the `B' final. Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) and Charlie Cunnick (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport Central) also made the `B' final for the 'Cats.
Grevers and Bubolz jumped Ackerman in the evening's super final, with Grevers swimming an NCAA `A' cut of 46.96 to win the event and break the pool record of 47.64 set last season by Michigan's Davis Tarwater. Bubolz was second with a `B' time of 48.33 and Nilsson took fourth with a 50.21.
Ehret won the `B' final with a 50.67, while Cunnick jumped all the way to second in the heat and sixth overall with a 50.86. Doman ended up seventh overall, while Pinkston and Barbic finished 11th and 12th, respectively.
Franklin jumped to the top of the standings and won the 100 breast super final, swimming a 56.63 to do so. Hostoffer captured the `B' final with a 59.04, while Lewno finished 11th overall.
In the 100 back prelims, Bubolz and Grevers made the super final by finishing first (50.46) and third (51.29) during the morning, respectively. Vogel, Eric Simpson (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), Sourbeer and Pinkston all made the `B' final.
Grevers turned on the jets in the super final, earning his second `A' standard of the evening with an event-winning time of 47.37. Bubolz captured second with a 49.42. Vogel and Simpson went 1-2 in the `B' final, with Vogel taking fifth overall with a 51.31 and Simpson finishing sixth overall with a 51.82.
The divers flip-flopped in the finals, with Kiaie winning the 3-meter board on the strength of 328.70 points. McIntosh took third with a score of 306.55.
The third pool record of the meet fell in the 800 free relay, and it fell hard. Nilsson, Grevers, Bubolz and Alexandrov turned in an NCAA `B' time of 6:26.17 to win the event and shatter NU's own pool record of 6:33.85 by a full 7.68 seconds. The time also broke the Wildcats' school record of 6:33.31 set in 1999.
Sunday's prelims get underway at 9 a.m., while the finals are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
