EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) won three events when Northwestern opened its 2010-11 home schedule Friday night against Purdue, but the Wildcats fell to the Boilermakers, 193-107, in the first of two meets scheduled this weekend at the Norris Aquatics Center.

Friday's action began when Purdue claimed a narrow .21 of a second win in the opening 200 medley relay over Northwestern's team of Tyler, Nathan Butler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Tony Mattar (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Dominik Cubelic (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South). The Boilermakers built an edge by winning the first three legs by about a tenth of a second each before Cubelic tried to chase down the PU anchor, but his 20.57 closing 50 free left NU short with a 1:32.93.

In the 1,000 free, senior Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) further lowered his career-best time in the event set in NU's season-opening meet against Indiana, cutting exactly two full seconds to place second overall Friday night with a 9:20.18.

While the first few events were going on, Purdue swept the top-three scoring positions in the 1-meter springboard event over in the diving well.

Purdue took the top two spots in the 200 free after the Boilermakers' runner-up won a three-way battle with Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) and John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) by turning in a 1:40.67 against Rimkus' 1:40.82 and Frutiger's 1:40.86.

Tyler picked up Northwestern's first win with a 50.73 in the 100 back, then Butler was second place in the 100 breast with a 58.08. In the 200 fly, the Wildcats captured first-, third- and fourth-place points, led by senior Sean Mathews' (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) 1:49.62. Mathews held off a very hard charge from Purdue's top finisher to win by .25 of a second, with Park placing third and Mattar coming in fourth.

Purdue took a commanding lead in the meet with sweeps of the top three scoring spots in the 50 free and the 3-meter diving event at the halfway point. After the break, the Boilers nabbed a 1-2 finish in the 100 free.

Sophomore Varun Shivakumar (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) nailed down a second-place finish in the 200 back for the Wildcats before Tyler's second win of the night came via a 2:05.50 in the 200 breast. Rimkus then secured a nearly full second win in the 500 free. Rimkus went out steady with the pack before building a commanding lead and coasting to victory during the 20-lap event.

After a Purdue 1-2 sweep in the 100 fly, Tyler won his third event with a strong 1:51.22 in the 200 IM, besting the field by over 1.6 seconds. Rimkus took third in the 200 IM for NU.

In the closing 400 free relay, the Northwestern team of Alexander Ratajczyk (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial), Mattar, Cubelic and Mathews held off Purdue's third-place relay by .18 of a second to finish in second place with a 3:07.30.

Northwestern returns to action at 1 p.m. CT tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 6, in a quad-meet against UW-Milwaukee, UIC and North Dakota at the Norris Aquatics Center.
