IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern made a charge with four-consecutive event wins during the second half of Saturday's meet at Iowa, but fell short of the Hawkeyes in a 171.5-128.5 decision.
The loss snaps Northwestern's five-meet winning streak in dual competition, dropping the Wildcats to 5-4 overall, 0-4 in the Big Ten.
Iowa won a tight opening 200 medley relay, besting both NU's `A' and `B' squads by a mere .30 of a second. The Wildcats' team of Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton), John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep), Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) and Truman Liang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College High School) were second with a 1:33.54, .09 of a second behind the Hawkeye's winning time. The Wildcats held a slim lead heading into the sprint leg before Iowa's Duncan Partridge turned in a 20.37 split to pass both NU teams.
The NU `B' squad of Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney), Nathan Butler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Chris Doman (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)) and Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) were third in the race with a 1:33.75.
In the 1,000 free, Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) came in second with a 9:35.28. John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) also scored points with a fourth-place finish in a time of 9:43.35.
For the first time all season, senior
Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) lost a 200-yard or longer dual race, coming in second in the 200 free with a 1:37.99, .62 of a second behind Iowa's winner. Nilsson had won his previous 13 such dual-meet events.
Beckman came in second for the 'Cats in the 100 back with a 51.49, followed by Vogel in third with a 52.62.
Trailing in the meet, 50-24, Northwestern then got its first event victory in resounding fashion, sweeping the top two spots in the 100 breast. Butler swam a career-best 57.04 for the win while Franklin was second with a 57.64.
The Wildcats followed by closing the gap even further in the 200 fly, taking first, second and fourth to make their deficit eight points, 60-52. Mathews won the race with a 1:52.09 while Park was second in 1:52.86. Doman's 1:55.52 was good for a pair of points in fourth place.
Iowa earned some points back headed into the mid-meet break, going 1-2 in the 50 free. Liang was third for the Wildcats in the race with a 21.39.
On the 3-meter diving board, Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) took second overall for the Wildcats with a 333.30, followed closely by Kalister Harmon (Olympia, Wash./Capital) in third with a 326.85.
Nilsson was the top finisher for NU in the 100 free with a second-place effort of 46.06. Beckman then ran away from the field to win the 200 back, clocking a 1:50.14 to win by 3.7 seconds.
Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) made it two wins in a row for the Wildcats with a victory in the 200 breast, going 2:05.93 to win by more than two full seconds. Iowa's Sean Hagan chased down Franklin in the final 25 yards to tie for second in 2:08.00. Butler was just behind the pair in fourth with a 2:08.76. The win helped the Wildcats close the gap a little more in the meet, 112.5-94.5.
Nilsson gave the 'Cats three-straight wins with a 4:33.03 victory in the 500 free, holding off a hard-charging Iowa swimmer by .57 of a second. Northwestern continued to charge back into the meet with a 1-3 finish in the 100 fly. Mathews won with a 50.57 followed by Doman in third with a 51.39. Doman was just .10 of a second out of second place in the race. The Wildcats came out of the event trailing by 12 points, 128.5-116.5.
The 1-meter diving board aided Iowa in putting the meet out of reach of NU. The Hawkeyes took the top two spots followed by Kiaie in third with a score of 293.70, giving Iowa a 143.5-120.5 advantage heading into the final two events.
In the final individual event, Tyler was second in the 200 IM with a 1:52.70. The Wildcats concluded the meet with a third-place finish in the 400 free relay after NU's second-place squad was DQ'ed.
Northwestern returns to action Jan. 30-31 in a two-day Big Ten tri-meet against Ohio State and Michigan in Columbus, Ohio.
