Wildcats return to action in their big events on Saturday
2012-13: Member of Northwestern's sprint and mid-distance freestyle groups who qualified for his first-career NCAA Championships after establishing career-best times in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events at the Big Ten Championships ... Academic All-Big Ten ... At the NCAA meet, placed 43rd in the 100 free (44.22) and 44th in the 50 free (20.34) ... Ranked first for NU in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free while ranking fourth in the 500 free on the Wildcats' top times list for the year ... Swam with all three of Northwestern's top free relays and with the best 400 medley relay of the year, earning an NCAA `B' consideration time with the 400 free group ... Qualified for the `A' final of the 100 free at the Big Ten Championships with a career-best and NCAA `B' cut of 43.14, a time that moved him into fourth all-time in the event for NU ... Ended up seventh in the conference in the race after an evening 43.47 ... Make the consolation final of the 50 free with a 19.97 before lowering that career-best time to a 10th-place `B' cut of 19.91, also good for fourth in the event in program history ... That 19.91 ultimately qualified Stephens for the NCAA field ... Swam a career-best and `B' cut of 1:37.22 to make the bonus final of the 200 free at the conference meet, placing 19th overall after a finals swim of 1:38.49 ... Qualified for five championship finals at Northwestern's own four-team TYR Invitational (11/16-11/18), winning the 50 free and 100 free ... His time of 44.76 in the 100 free finals was a then-career-best time ... Took third in the TYR 200 free, fifth in the 500 free and seventh in the 50 back ... Member of a five-Wildcat contingent at the AT&T USA Swimming Nationals (11/29-12/1) ... Finished 31st in the 200 free with a then-season-best 1:39.06, 41st in the 100 free and 44th in the 50 free at that meet ... Scored points in all of his dual-meet swims save for two at the NU Invite (2/1-2/2), giving him 17 of those efforts total ... Collected dual wins in the 200 free against UIC and Western Kentucky (11/2), Purdue (11/3) and Milwaukee (1/16) while also winning the 50 free versus Wisconsin (11/8).
2011-12: Enjoyed a breakout sophomore season, ranking on Northwestern's top times list in five freestyle events while also swimming with three of NU's top relays of the year ... Ranked second in the 100 free and 200 free and fifth in the 50 free, 500 free and 1,000 free races for NU ... Academic All-Big Ten ... Qualified for the bonus final of the 200 free at the Big Ten Championships with a career-best and NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 1:37.56 before eventually placing 24th ... Also finished 24th in the 100 free after a career-best 44.78 in the prelims ... Competed in the 50 free at the conference meet, as well, earning another career-best with a 20.53 in the race ... Swam with NU's 400 free and 800 free relays at the Big Ten meet, earning NCAA `B' cuts with both ... That 800 free relay is the third fastest in Northwestern history in the event ... Competed with all three of the Wildcats' freestyle relays at NU's own five-team TYR Invitational (11/18-11/20), earning NCAA `B' efforts with each ... Led off Northwestern's best 400 free relay of the regular season, which earned a `B' cut in a double dual with Denver and No. 25 Missouri (1/28), out-touching the Tigers at the wall by one-hundredth of a second to give the Wildcats the win in the meet ... Earned a pool record with the 200 free relay at Lewis in a double dual against Lewis and Carthage College (1/7) ... Had in-season career-best times in all four of his events ... Earned his top 50 free time (20.96) in an exhibition swim against Denver and Missouri (1/28) and his top 100 free time (45.48) as the 400 free relay leadoff in that same meet ... Top 200 free time (1:40.36) accounted for a third-place finish at the TYR Invitational and his top 500 free time came during a dual meet at Notre Dame (1/14) ... In addition to his third-place finish in the 200 free at the TYR, also made the championship final and placed seventh in the 100 free ... Earned second swims at the TYR in the 50 free (12th), 50 back (13th) and 500 free (20th) ... Won the 50 free in a dual at Lewis with Carthage College (1/7) ... Compiled five total top- three dual meet finishes on the season.
2010-11: Member of Northwestern's freestyle unit ... Swam season-best times in all three of his Big Ten Championships events, placing 39th in the 100 free (45.38), 54th in the 200 free (1:40.67) and 59th in the 500 free (4:33.86) ... Also turned in a 20.96 in the 50 free during a time trial at the conference meet ... Made two consolation finals at Northwestern's own five-team TYR Invitational (11/19-11/21), finishing 10th in the 50 back and 11th in the 500 free ... Was 18th following a bonus final swim in the 200 free at the TYR ... Scored dual-meet points with three top-five finishes during the year, including a third-place effort in the 500 free in a quad meet against Carthage, Lewis and North Central (01/08).
High School: Two-time Wisconsin state champion (100 and 200 free) and member of the state champion 400 free relay team for 2009-10 ... Ranked as the seventh-best recruit in the state of Wisconsin by Collegeswimming.com... Named an all-American for his 200 and 500 free times ...
