    Experience:
    Fourth season

John Pontz was hired in July 2004 and is entering his fourth season at Northwestern University.

During Pontz's time with the Wildcats, the program has earned 81 All-America accolades, 24 Big Ten Championships, five national titles and two NCAA records -- the most successful era in Northwestern swimming history. Seventeen school records (all but two of the records on the books) have fallen since Pontz's arrival.

Pontz heads up recruiting efforts in addition to his duties coaching stroke groups.

Before arriving at Northwestern, Pontz spent the 2001-03 seasons with Arizona State University, which competes in the Pac-10--one of the toughest swimming conferences in the country. His coaching responsibilities there included the distance freestylers and the middle-distance stroke group.

While at ASU, he also was the head coach of the local swim club, Sun Devil Aquatics. During his last few years as club coach, he became one of the most successful coaches in the country, putting his club athletes on the following teams: the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team, 2001 and 2002 World Championship Teams, the 2001 Goodwill Games Team (two athletes), the 1999 Pan American Team, the 1999 World University Team and the 1998, 2001 and 2004 National Junior Team.

Originally from Lancaster, Pa., Pontz earned his bachelor's degree in finance at Penn State in 1993.
