    1996-97 Season Recap

    The 1996-97 Northwestern Men's swimming and Diving season was one of the most successful in school history. After going just 3-9 in dual meets in 1995-96, NU rebounded to post a 9-7 record in 1997, including a 2-5 Big Ten mark. The 'Cats opened the season with six wins in their first eight meets, including a win in the Northwestern Relays. The 'Cats then went to the Big Ten Championships, where they finished sixth, their best finish in 22 years. The 'Cats broke 14 school records at the meet, including five relays. Freshman Steve Harms broke three school records and seniors Rob Rausch and Scott Smale and sophomore Brian Walters each broke two. Rausch and Smale both qualified for the NCAA Championships and both came home All-Americans. Rausch was a two-time pick in the 100 and 200 breast. Smale earned honors in the 200 free and set a school record in the event.
