EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's soccer team is set to kick off the 2005 Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship by facing Ohio State in the opening round at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex.
Northwestern enters the 2005 Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship looking for a repeat of last year's performance when they reached the championship match.
The 'Cats have experienced recent success at the Big Ten Championship, and are the only team to notch a win in each of the last two conference championship tournaments.
In its only meeting with Ohio State in the 2005 season, Northwestern traveled to Columbus back on Oct. 28. In that match, John Carlstedt (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) scored in the 70th minute to tie the match at 1-1. But the Buckeyes scored the match winner in the 72nd minute for the 2-1 win.
The two teams enter the match closely matched statistically. The Wildcat offense has tallied 25 goals and is averaging 1.47 goals per game, while the Buckeyes have scored 24 times, averaging 1.33 goals per game.
On the defensive end, Northwestern has recorded six shutouts this season, while the Wildcat goalkeepers have combined to make 66 saves. Ohio State has blanked opponents four times, and recorded 54 saves.
Northwestern comes into the match having outscored opponents 12-8 over the last seven matches.
Leading the way for NU has been junior Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands). North has tallied 17 points on eight goals and an assist. North also has three match-winning goals this season.
Teaming up with North has been junior forward Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy). Alvarez has fought through injury throughout this season and, despite only starting seven matches, scored 11 points on three goals and five assists. Alvarez has been hot as of late, scoring two goals and five assists in his last seven matches.
Ohio State (10-6-2, 3-2-1) is led by senior forward Kevin Nugent and sophomore forward Xavier Balc. Nugent has seven goals and four assists this season, while Balc has 17 points on five goals and seven assists.
