EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior Chris Ritter (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) was named the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Week the conference announced Monday after his game-winning goal in Northwestern’s 1-0 win over Michigan Saturday. Ritter’s goal at the 83:09 mark not only gave the Wildcats the win in their final regular season match, but also their first Big Ten regular season title.
Ritter had four shots in the game and his biggest one came late in the second half. Reed Losee (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) sent a cross in from the right flank to Ritter, who chipped it in to the top center from about six yards out for his fourth goal of the year.
This is Ritter’s second career honor. The first award came after he scored two goals and was the tournament MVP at the Lakeside Classic in September. Northwestern has brought home at least one player of the week award the last five weeks and this week’s honor is a school-record eighth award. Indiana was the last team to win eight Big Ten Player of the Week awards during the 2005 season and it was also the last team to be honored five-straight weeks during the 2003 season (Oct. 13-Nov. 10).
With the win, Northwestern enters the 2011 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed and rides a nine-match unbeaten streak (7-0-2, including 4-0-2 mark in conference action) into Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wildcats have a first-round bye and will meet the winner of the No. 4 Indiana/No. 5 Michigan State match at the U-M Soccer Stadium at noon on Friday.
