EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman forward Joey Calistri has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Calistri helped the Wildcats come back for a 1-1 draw at No. 22 Indiana Thursday night in the regular-season finale. He scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 52nd minute to tie things up at 1-1 and after two overtime periods, the Wildcats left Bloomington, Ind., with the point they needed to claim a share of the 2012 Big Ten regular-season title.
Calistri’s goal helped the Wildcats claim back-to-back Big Ten titles as they finished with 11 points (3-1-2) in the conference standings to share the 2012 crown with Penn State. This is the second Big Ten title in school history after the ’Cats won the title outright in 2011.
This is the second weekly honor for Calistri after he won the award on Oct. 15 following his three-point game in NU’s 2-1 win over No. 7 Notre Dame. Calistri is one of three Wildcats to bring home Big Ten weekly awards this season with sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Miller
winning defensive honors on Oct. 15 and senior midfielder Chris Ritter
received offensive accolades on Sept. 10.
Northwestern wrapped up the regular season at 10-4-4, 3-1-2 in the Big Ten, and will be the No. 2 seed at this week’s Big Ten Tournament, played at Lakeside Field. NU faces No. 7 seed Ohio State at 6 p.m. Wednesday night.
