EVANSTON, Ill. -- With Michigan State’s 1-0 loss at Michigan tonight, Northwestern has now officially secured a share of the 2012 Big Ten regular-season title.

The Wildcats finished the regular season with 11 points (3-1-2) and share the 2012 crown with co-champion Penn State (3-1-2, 11 points). Needing a win at Michigan to claim the title outright, Michigan State finishes the conference season with nine points (3-3-0).

“First of all I’d like to congratulate Penn State and head coach Bob Warming on sharing the co-championship and earning the top seed in the tournament,” Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. “It’s a great day for our program. We didn’t get to jump around on the field and celebrate like we did last year but nonetheless, to be back-to-back champions is just amazing. The effort we gave on Thursday night against Indiana was absolutely epic and to earn that point there after being down, really showed the character of this team. I’m very happy for the program and all of the guys, not just on the team, but all of the guys throughout the years. We weren’t a flash in the pan, we’re a program built with a lot of character and I hope everybody that’s ever been a part of this program takes some time to celebrate this.”

This is the second-consecutive conference crown for head coach Tim Lenahan’s Wildcats after they won the first title in program history during the 2011 campaign. Lenahan has guided the team to a 7-1-4 record during regular-season Big Ten games the last two years.

Northwestern now focuses its attention on hosting the 2012 Big Ten Tournament at Lakeside Field, Wednesday, Nov. 7-Sunday, Nov. 11. NU will be the No. 2 seed and Penn State receives the No. 1 seed by virtue of its head-to-head win against the Wildcats. NU will play the 6 p.m. match on Wednesday, Nov. 7 and will play the No. 7 seed.
