EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern swept this week’s Big Ten Player of the Week awards with freshman forward Joey Calistri taking home offensive honors and sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Miller received the award on the defensive side.
Both played a key part in NU’s 2-1 upset of No. 7 Notre Dame last Tuesday at Lakeside Field and the team's 1-0 shutout of Ohio State Sunday, helping the Wildcats stay atop the conference standings with a perfect 3-0-0 record.
Calistri scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season against the Fighting Irish and tallied his first career assist on the eventual game-winner. The three-point game helped the Wildcats knock off their first top-10 opponent since downing No. 4 Akron in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. This is the first weekly honor for the freshman from Deerfield, Ill.
Miller picks up the third weekly honor of his career after allowing just one goal in 180 minutes last week. The Woodbury, N.J., native was posting a shutout against the Fighting Irish until they scored in the 86th minute. Miller defended against 21 Notre Dame shot attempts, including 15 in the second half, and made a season-high six saves in NU’s victory.
Against Ohio State, Miller posted his fifth shutout of the season, second in three Big Ten matches, and 14th of his career. He currently ranks third all-time on NU’s career shutout list and has only allowed one goal in conference action so far this season.
Calistri and Miller mark the second and third Wildcats to be honored by the Big Ten this year as senior midfielder Chris Ritter was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10.
The Wildcats have a busy week ahead of them, playing down the road at Loyola (Chicago) Wednesday at 7 p.m. and then host another Big Ten foe Sunday at noon when Penn State comes to town.
