EVANSTON, Ill. – Senior Oliver Kupe (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week the conference office announced Monday. It is the first weekly honor for Kupe and second offensive award for Northwestern this season as Chris Ritter (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) won the award on Sept. 19. In total, Northwestern has three Big Ten Player of the Week honorees this season, the most since four Wildcats won during the 2009 season, with goalie Tyler Miller (Woodbury, N.J./Bishop Eustace) winning defensive honors on Sept. 5.
Kupe scored two big goals for Northwestern last week as the Wildcats tied with No. 12 Notre Dame 1-1 Wednesday and beat Ohio State 3-2 Sunday. The Fighting Irish had the 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but Kupe brought the Wildcats back with a shot from nine yards out that went through the Notre Dame’s goalkeeper’s legs at the 78:50 mark to even the score. Kupe had a team-leading three shots in the match, including two on goal.
He then scored his second goal of the week, and team-leading fifth of the season, on a header into the top right corner at the 47:28 mark Sunday, giving NU the 2-0 lead. Sunday’s goal was the 19th of his career, which ties him for ninth on NU’s all-time goals list. Kupe’s four points on the week puts him at 48 career points and one more would tie him for 10th on NU’s career points list.
With his two goals last week, Kupe has now scored in back-to-back games for the second time this season. He scored once in NU’s games against UMKC (Sept. 5) and Portland (Sept. 9) earlier this season.
Northwestern (5-4-3 overall, 1-0-1 Big Ten) is back at Lakeside Field Wednesday night. Northern Illinois comes to town for a 7 p.m. match and the first 150 fans in the stands will receive a FREE Northwestern drawstring bag.
