Chris Ritter Tabbed Offensive Player of the Week
After earning MVP honors at the NIU adidas Invite over the weekend, senior midfielder Chris Ritter is this week’s Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. He played a key role in keeping the Wildcats unbeaten after the weekend, posting the game-winning goal Friday vs. Drake and assisting on two goals Sunday in a win vs. Rhode Island, scoring four points on the weekend. Against Drake, Ritter scored his second goal of the season less than three minutes into overtime (92:25), giving NU the 2-1 victory.

    Last Time Out
Northwestern won the NIU adidas Invite last weekend, defeating Drake 2-1 in OT and Rhode Island, 3-2. Ritter was the tournament MVP while freshman forward Joey Calistri (two goals), sophomore defender Grant Wilson (two assists) and junior defender Scott Lakin made the all-tournament team. With the two wins, Northwestern extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to five matches (3-0-2).

Last Time at the Lakeside Classic...
The Wildcats won the 2011 edition of the Lakeside Classic, shutting out UC Davis, 1-0, and Xavier, 2-0. Ritter was the MVP of the tournament while defenders Jarrett Baughman and Nikko Boxall, along with goalkeeper Tyler Miller made the All-Tournament team. Northern Illinois also participated in last year’s tournament. Ritter scored two goals, including the game-winner vs. UC Davis, and Boxall scored the game-winner vs. Xavier in the 12th minute off a header.

    Hard to Beat
The Wildcats are unbeaten on the year so far (3-0-2) and have not lost a regular-season game in quite some time. Dating back to last season, NU has not lost a regular-season game since Sept. 28, 2011 and is unbeaten in its last 14 regular-season contests (10-0-4). Northwestern rattled of an 11-match unbeaten streak last year, which included two wins en route to the Big Ten Tournament title. Northwestern’s lone loss in nearly a year was during the NCAA Tournament, meaning NU is unbeaten in 16 of its last 17 games (11-1-5).

    Coming Home Again
Beginning with this weekend, Northwestern is at Lakeside Field for four straight matches. Following the Lakeside Classic, NU kicks off its 2012 Big Ten title defense vs. Michigan at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, and then hosts cross-town rival DePaul on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.

    Sharing the Scoring
NU lost just two starters off last year’s Big Ten Championship squad but both were key members of the offense, including leading goal-scorer Oliver Kupe. The Wildcats have replaced Kupe by committee as four different players have scored so far this year. Freshman forward Joey Calistri leads the team with three goals, including two vs. Rhode Island, while senior midfielders Kyle Schickel and Chris Ritter have two each and freshman forward Eric Weberman tallied his first career goal last weekend. vs. Rhode Island.
