EVANSTON, Ill.- Following Northwestern's 2-0 road victory against Xavier on Saturday, the Big Ten Conference announced today that sophomore forward Joey Calistri was named Offensive Player of the Week and junior goalkeeper Tyler Miller earned the Defensive Player of the Week award.
Callistri, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, scored both of Northwestern's goals in the Wildcats' 2-0 road win over the Musketeers. The Deerfield, Ill. native netted the eventual game-winner just 60-seconds into the match, representing Northwestern's fastest strike since the 2004 season. His insurance tally in the 23rd minute secured the second multi-goal effort of his young collegiate career. The Offensive Player of the Week honor is Callistri's second, following recognition on Oct. 15, 2012.
Miller collected his second shutout of the season by turning aside ten Xavier shots on Saturday. The sterling performance gave the goalkeeper the 21st shutout of his career, which ranks second in program history. It marked the fourth time in Miller's career he has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, after previously earning the award during the week of Oct. 15, 2012 and twice during the 2011 season.
The 'Cats travel to DeKalb, Ill. For the NIU tournament from Sep. 13-15, facing Green Bay and Butler. NU returns home to Evanston for the Lakeside Classic from Sep. 20-Sep. 22.
