EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern goaltender Tyler Miller has been named one of 30 national candidates for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

"Tyler understands that he would not be able to accumulate the individual awards and recognition without the help of his teammates, and he is the first to credit their effort," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "His calm but confident leadership inspires his team in challenging situations and pushes them harder in their training environment. As a senior, his influence on the team extends beyond the field as he serves as a mentor for the younger players as they acclimate to the Northwestern University campus and the rigors of the college soccer schedule."

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Miller, named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List this season for the second consecutive year, kicked off his senior campaign this weekend with back-to-back clean sheets against Quinnipiac and Hofstra, helping lead the Wildcats to the 2014 Lakeside Classic title. The netminder is currently tied for the program record with 29 career shutouts.

In the classroom the Woodbury, N.J., native has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in both seasons he has been eligible (sophomore, junior). During his time at Northwestern Miller has volunteered at Field Day, helped host a futsal tournament for the International Students Association, participated in the Kids Club Olympic Sports Day and regularly assists the NU marketing department with post-game autograph sessions. Additionally, Tyler and his teammates are very active in Cycle for Survival, an annual spinning fundraiser for cancer research.

After opening the season with a pair of wins at Lakeside Field, the Wildcats hit the road this week to take on UC-Santa Barbara (Fri., Sep 5) and Cal-State Fullerton (Sun., Sep. 7) on the west coast. Tim Lenahan's squad is at home next on Wednesday, September 17 when they host Valparaiso in a special late-night match that will kick off at 9:30 p.m. CT.

Season tickets are now on sale by calling the Northwestern ticket office at 1-888-GO-PURPLE or visiting Men's soccer season ticket holders will once again receive a limited edition Northwestern Soccer scarf and an invitation to an exclusive event. In addition to the Sheraton Chicago-Northbrook Lakeside Classic, the Wildcats have an exciting home schedule that also includes visits from the 2014 NCAA runners-up, Maryland, on Oct. 5 and the 2013 Big Ten champions, Penn State, on Nov. 2.
