Chicago, Ill.-It took double overtime before either team could find the back of the net.
In Monday’s men’s soccer match between Northwestern and DePaul, freshman midfielder Brandon Medina scored the lone goal in the 110th minute, giving NU the 1-0 victory at Wish Field.
“It was a very exciting game. Both teams fought really hard in a game that probably deserved to end 0-0,” Wildcats head coach Tim Lenahan said. “It was back and fourth the entire game.”
The Wildcats (1-1-0) outshot DePaul (0-2-0) 10-7 and tallied seven shots on goal to the Blue Demons’ three.
On the game-winning goal senior midfielder Lepe Seetane took a pass from Joey Calistri and pushed the ball to Medina, who knocked it into the goal from eight yards out in the middle of the field.
"DePaul had a phenomenal chance on the set piece with 20 seconds left," Lenahan said. "[Senior midfielder] Chris Ritter blocked the initial shot. Brandon Medina blocked the follow up shot and then we were off to the races. Joey really made a great play and found Lepe.
“What was amazing was Brandon trailed the play for 100 yards to get the finish, so it was an exciting game for the fans. It was a tough, hard found game neither team deserved to lose, but really happy with the win and hopefully this will get us going here in a little bit."
Junior goalkeeper Tyler Miller notched the victory for the ‘Cats, registering three saves.
The ‘Cats return to action on Saturday, Sep. 7, traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio to face Xavier. NU returns home on Friday, Sep. 20, hosting the Lakeside Classic and hosts Saint Mary’s at 7:30 pm CT.
