EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men’s soccer junior goalkeeper Tyler Miller (Woodbury, N.J./Bishop Eustace) has been named to the 2013 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy watch list, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced today.
The Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in intercollegiate soccer, is awarded to the country’s top Division I soccer player.
Miller is one of 34 players in the nation to make the watch list and is the Big Ten’s only representative.
A two-time First Team All-Big Ten goalkeeper, Miller played every minute of the 2012 season in net (2,185), starting all 23 games for Northwestern.
He compiled a 13-6-4 record with a .730 save percentage and 0.82 goals-against average, the third best single-season mark in Wildcats history. A Second-Team All-Great Lakes Region and Academic All-Big Ten selection, Miller recorded 10 shutouts in 2012, the second most in a single season in NU history.
"While this great recognition for Tyler, with all the great players in the Big Ten, it's surprising that he is the only representative from the Big Ten,” Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said “That being said, Tyler really has a great blend of talent, confidence and humility that creates a drive not only to be great for himself but to help lead his teammates to success as well.”
Helping the Wildcats win two Big Ten regular-season titles in as many years, Miller ranks second in school history with 19 all-time shutouts.
A complete list of the individuals named to the list can be found here.
Miller is the fifth Wildcat to be named to the MAC Hermann watch list in school history, joining Matt Eliason (2010), Mark Blades (2009), David Roth (2007) and Gerardo Alvarez (2005).
The MAC Hermann list will be narrowed down by NSCAA members from Division I programs to 15 semifinalists in November. NSCAA member coaches and fans will then vote for their top three choices and the finalists will be announced in December. The winners will be announced at the awards’ banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in January.
Northwestern hosts Oakland in an exhibition match on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. and opens the regular season facing UC Santa Barbara at Lakeside Field on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. Single-game and season tickets for the 10 home matches at Lakeside Field are now available for purchase online or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
