HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Northwestern men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday afternoon thanks to a "spectacular" goal from senior defender Grant Wilson. The 'Cats also secured a 2-0 win in a 35-minute reserve game against FDU with goals by sophomore Mike Roberge and freshman Sam Forsgren. The club will wrap up its three-game preseason tour of New Jersey on Friday, August 21, at 6:30 p.m. CT when they take on St. John's University at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J.
"Both teams were very tired as we are still early in the preseason," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "We probably had the better legs at the end and were able to control most of the play. Grant Wilson's goal was spectacular and the reserve group played really well. FDU is a team that was in the Sweet Sixteen in 2012 so it was a good test and reflects positive progress as we build towards the regular season."
The Wildcats opened their preseason tour with a 4-1 win over the South Jersey All-Stars on Saturday evening at Richard Stockton College, the same day that the squad traveled east. "We played pretty well on Saturday considering a tough travel day, departing campus at 4 a.m. for our flight and playing at 4 p.m.," said Lenahan. "With 22 players healthy we got to see each group play 45-minutes."
Chicago's Big Ten Team kicks off the 2014 regular-season at Lakeside Field on Friday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. when they host Quinnipiac in the Sheraton Chicago-Northbrook Lakeside Classic.
