EVANSTON, Ill. - The back-to-back Big Ten champion Northwestern men’s soccer team enters the 2013 season ranked No. 16 in the College Soccer News Preseason Top 30 National Poll.

Northwestern finished the 2012 season with a 13-6-4 record, reaching the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament, and winning a share of the Big Ten title for the second season in a row.

CSN included three additional Big Ten teams in the poll: Indiana (No. 1), Michigan State (No. 25) and Michigan (No. 28). This season at Lakeside Field, NU hosts two non-conference opponents ranked by CSN, UC Santa Barbara (No. 13) in the season opener on Aug. 30 and Fairleigh Dickinson (No. 30) in the Lakeside Classic on Sept. 22.

Additionally, Wildcats senior midfielder Chris Ritter earned a spot on the CSN Preseason All-American Third Team. The defending Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year started all 23 games for Northwestern in 2012, tallying five goals and six assists.

Northwestern begins its season with two exhibition matches, hosting Oakland (Tue., Aug. 20) before traveling to Louisville (Sat. Aug. 24) to face the Cardinals, who rank No. 19 in the CSN poll.

The Wildcats return eight starters and 16 letterwinners from their 2012 Big Ten championship program. The list includes First Team All-Big Ten selections junior goalkeeper Tyler Miller, junior defender Nikko Boxall, sophomore forward Joey Calistri and Ritter. Calistri was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and joined sophomore midfielder Cole Missimo on the All-Freshman Team. Six incoming freshman also join head coach Tim Lenahan’s squad for 2013.
