EVANSTON, Ill. --Fifty-seven Northwestern student-athletes from 15 different Wildcats programs have earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar awards, announced today (July 9) by the conference office.

These Wildcats scholars represent diverse fields of study that are truly representative of the academic pursuits offered at Northwestern. Included in these 57 award winners are:

    • 10 engineering majors across seven different specializations (chemical, industrial, mechanical, manufacturing and design, civil, biomedical and engineering design innovation)
    • 6 economics majors
    • 12 student-athletes with majors in the School of Education and Social Policy
    • 7 student-athletes with majors in the School of Communications
    • 4 student-athletes with majors in the Medill School of Journalism
    • 2 student-athletes majoring in the intense Integrated Science Program (ISP)
    • 4 graduate school degree candidates
    • 3 double majors

The award, in its sixth year of existence, was established by the Big Ten Faculty Representatives to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, this award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.

The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for their academic career; in 2013-14, Northwestern earned a school-record 220 total Academic All-Big Ten honors to put it over the 200 number for the fourth-consecutive year.
