BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. –Chris Ritter (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) made Northwestern men’s soccer history on Sunday, June 1 at Toyota Park.

He started and played all 90 minutes for the Chicago Fire in the team’s match against the LA Galaxy, becoming the first Northwestern player to see action in Major League Soccer.

“It was an exciting day for sure, getting your first start and even making your debut is certainly a special day,” Ritter said after his first match. “[Chicago Fire head coach Frank Yallop] told me to play my game, which is the best thing to hear from a coach. I think the whole coaching staff had all the confidence in the world in me.”

Ritter and the Fire finished with a 1-1 tie against the Galaxy, led by Landon Donovan.

“I think Chris has done well in his games he’s had in the reserves,” Yallop said. “He trains well, just looking at the personnel with the few bumps and scrapes we do have, I felt that our forward play has been good. I felt today other than the chance they scored on, we kept them pretty quiet – a very good team that’s good at going forward.”

A two-time All-Big Ten selection and 2012 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Ritter started 82 games for the ‘Cats from 2009-2013, tallying 15 goals and 14 assists in his NU career.
