EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's soccer team improved its record to 4-2 after defeating IUPUI 2-1 in its second game of the NIU Adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational Sunday, Sept. 18. Brad Napper (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) knocked home the match winner at 86:55 to give the Wildcats the win.
The Wildcats came out of the gate looking to score early. The 'Cats were awarded six corner kicks in the first period, and had four shots-on-goal. IUPUI goalkeeper Peter Brasovan did make all four saves in the first half, but Northwestern's persistent offensive attacks would catch up with him in the second half.
Defensively, the Wildcats held IUPUI in check in the first half. The Jaguars were only able to get off three shots, only one of which was on goal. Freshman Misha Rosenthal (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) got the start at goal and notched two saves in the match.
Coming out of the break, the Wildcats were poised to light up the scoreboard first. Northwestern tallied the first three shots of the second half, one by David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) and two by Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands). At 54:43, North took an Eric Brin (Westlake, Calif./Westlake) and sent it by Brasovan to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The goal was North's fourth of the season.
Northwestern's defense held tough throughout the second half, allowing the Jaguars only four total shots. On that fourth shot, however, IUPUI was able to slip one past Rosenthal to tie the game at 1-1.
With less than five minutes to play, the Wildcats went on the offensive. After Brin sent a header just high, the Wildcats were awarded a corner kick. Roth took the kick, it was collected by Napper and he sent it by Brasovan for the match winner with a little more than three minutes to play. The goal was Napper's first of the season, Roth's fourth assist.
With the win, the Wildcats went 2-0 in the NIU Adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational this weekend. Northwestern's Jaro Pylypczak
(Lombard, Ill./Benet Academy), David Roth
and Adam Sirois
(Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) were named to the all-tournament team.
Northwestern will kick off Big Ten action against Michigan at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25.
