NU vs. Xavier Box Score
Two goals by sophomore forward Joey Calistri, including the fastest goal for the Wildcats since 2004, 1:00 into the game, gave Northwestern a 2-0 road victory against Xavier Saturday night.
Calistri found the back of the net 60 seconds into the match, hitting a one-touch goal off a throw-in from junior midfielder Grant Wilson. It was the fastest goal for the Wildcats since Gerardo Alvarez scored in the game’s 0:47 mark against Oral Roberts on Sept. 24, 2004.
Calistri put Northwestern up 2-0 with 22:04 remaining in the first half, scoring his second goal of the game after controlling a rebound after an initial shot attempt was blocked. It marked Calistri’s second career multi-goal game. He also tallied two goals against Rhode Island on Sept. 9, 2012.
“A great win for us tonight against a very good team,” Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan said. “We scored right out of the chute which is really a good thing, especially when you’re playing on the road.
“Joey added a second one, so it was great to get him back on the scoreboard with his first two goals of the year. His game is all about hard work, putting the extra work in and practicing and finishing, and it certainly paid off.”
With the ‘Cats taking a 2-0 lead, it ended the game’s scoring as Northwestern pitched its second shutout of the season. It marked junior goalkeeper Tyler Miller’s 21st career shutout, ranking second in school history behind Misha Rosenthal (29 from 2005-09).
“[Xavier] came at us with a lot of firepower to start the second half, but I thought the last 15 minutes, we really managed the game well defensively,” Lenahan said. “Our back four played really well.
Northwestern outshot the Musketeers 11-10 and 3-2 on shots on goal. Calistri finished with five shots and senior midfielder Lepe Seetane recorded three shots.
The ‘Cats travel to DeKalb, Ill. For the NIU tournament from Sep. 13-15, facing Green Bay and Butler. NU returns home to Evanston for the Lakeside Classic from Sep. 20-Sep. 22.
