SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Two of the nation's top soccer programs squared off Monday night in South Bend, Ind. Unfortunately, it wasn't the best of nights for the Wildcats as No. 14 Northwestern dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 10 Notre Dame.

"We ran into a very good team tonight. Notre Dame is an excellent team and they were ready to play, particularly in the first 15 minutes," said head coach Tim Lenahan after the game. "Our legs might have a bit heavy from playing at Saint Louis Saturday night and then with the long trip to South Bend, but we're not going to let that be an excuse. Tomorrow is a much-needed day off.

"We scheduled this weekend trip to get our guys ready. Even though we're not happy with the 3-0 result, I think we're in pretty good shape after the preseason and we're looking forward to our match with Colgate on Friday. After the first 20 minutes the game settled in and it was a good experience in terms of getting us ready for the year and I think we're going to have a pretty good team."

Kurt Martin led Notre Dame with the first two goals and assisted on the third to 2006 Hermann Trophy winner Joseph Lapira. All three goals came within the first 17 minutes of the game.

Martin's first goal in the third minute came off a rebound opportunity into the upper left corner of the goal. His second was another unassisted goal from 40 yards out at the 13-minute mark. Just under four minutes later he fed Lapira to cap the scoring.

After that, the Wildcats competed much better and stuck with the Irish throughout the remainder of the contest. Sophomore Mark Blades and Hermann Trophy candidate David Roth recorded two and one shot on goal, respectively. The Irish outshot NU 12-9 overall.

Misha Rosenthal (first half) and Will Briley (second half) shared time in goal, each getting 45 minutes. Briley recorded one save and allowed no goals.

The Wildcats begin playing for keeps this Friday when they host the Fifth Annual Lakeside Classic in Evanston. Their first game is at 4:30 p.m. against Colgate.
