No. 14 Northwestern Battles No. 22 Saint Louis to 1-1 Tie
Aug. 25, 2007 ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- In front of his hometown crowd, senior David Roth tallied the lone goal for the Wildcats on a penalty kick as No. 14 Northwestern battled No. 22 Saint Louis to a 1-1 tie in exhibition play under the lights at Robert H. Hermann Stadium. Northwestern will play its final preseason contest Monday night at 10th-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., before the regular-season opener at home next Friday at 4:30 against Colgate. The Wildcats were the aggressors in the opening minutes with one shot and three corner opportunities in the first five minutes. But the Billikens held strong and got on the board first in the 23rd minute when Calum Agnus fired a shot from the top of the box past NU's Misha Rosenthal for the early 1-0 lead. After a Saint Louis foul eleven minutes later, Roth made good on his penalty try to tie the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute. Northwestern had a chance to take the lead late in the half, but Carl Pett's header try went wide. NU had just one shot attempt in the second half, which would have been the game-winner. In the 69th minute, freshman Matt Eliason's shot just missed as the ball hit off the post. Rosenthal had a busy night in goal, playing all 90 minutes making a game-high five saves as the Billikens showered the Wildcats with 13 shots.
