EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern concludes its fall season this Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 5-7, at the eighth-annual Gifford Collegiate Championship hosted by UCLA at the CordeValle Resort in San Martin, Calif.
The 10-team field includes five teams ranked in the nation's current top-25 according to Golfstat.com: No. 5 UCLA, No. 8 USC, No. 13 SMU, No. 17 Stanford and No. 24 Northwestern. No. 30 Tennessee, No. 46 Coastal Carolina, No. 50 Oregon State, No. 88 Lamar and No. 113 San Jose State round out the field.
Teams will play 18 holes on each of the tournament's three days. While most collegiate tournaments feature lineups of five players with the top four scoring for their teams, the Gifford is a play six, score five format. Those competitors will attack the par 72, 7,169-yard CordeValle Resort golf course, which hosted the PGA TOUR Fall Series Frys.com Open earlier in October. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
Northwestern's lineup includes a pair of fall tournament medalists in Inverness Intercollegiate winner
Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) and Windon Memorial champion
John Callahan (Hinsdale, Ill./Benet Academy). Senior
Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) has had three top-10s in NU's four previous fall tournaments. Sophomores
Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) and
Matthew Negri (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont) along with redshirt freshman
Scott Smith (Pepper Pike, Ohio/University School), who fired back-to-back even par rounds in his first college tournament as a member of the team lineup at last month's Rod Myers Invitational, round out NU's squad.
Freshman Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) will compete as an individual for the Wildcats.
After the winter break, Northwestern will return to action as the three-time defending champion at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in February of 2013. The Wildcats have won 14 match-play matches in a row dating to 2009.
