EVANSTON, Ill. -- Coming off their historic co-medalist finish at the Rod Myers Intercollegiate Sunday, Northwestern's powerful duo of senior Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) and freshman Matt Fitzpatrick (Sheffield, England/Tapton) have been named co-Big Ten Golfers of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Perry and Fitzpatrick tied atop the standings with identical totals of 9-under 207, beating out Baylor's Kyle Jones by a stroke. The NU duo led the Wildcats to their second team tournament victory in four events so far this year.
Perry earned the third individual victory of his college career after following an opening 1-under 71 by matching his career-low score with a 6-under 66 in the second round. Trailing Fitzpatrick by two strokes entering the final round, Perry carded a 2-under 70 to catch his younger teammate. Perry now has three top-10 finishes in NU's first four tournaments of the year.
Perry now is a three-time Big Ten Golfer of the Week honoree after winning the award in consecutive weeks during the spring of 2013.
For his part, Fitzpatrick opened a two-stroke lead on the field during Saturday's 36 holes of play at the Rod Myers, firing scores of 5-under 67 and 4-under 68. He held steady down the stretch Sunday for an even-par 72, rolling in a three-footer for par at the last to match Perry's clubhouse lead of 9-under.
The win was the first of Fitzpatrick's collegiate career in just his fourth start. He also is a first-time Big Ten Golfer of the Week honoree.
